Laser hair removal is a wonderful service that provides great results, but it is not without its risks. At Laser for Less, your technician will always ask if you have had any recent sun exposure, had a recent spray tan or used any products that could make your skin darker. There are a few reasons we ask you these questions and they are all for your own safety. If your skin is tanner than it was the last time you were in, the settings on the laser may be set too high and could cause damage to the skin’s surface. Some of these risks include but are not limited to hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, burns, blisters and pro-longed redness. The reason for this is because the laser is attracted to melanin. Sun-tanning increases the melanin in your skin, making it hard for the laser to decipher the difference between your skin and the hair follicle. However, at laser for less we do have the option to treat tan or dark skin with the Nd:YAG made by Candela on the Gentle Max Pro. This laser is effective, but because it is safer for dark skin, it is not as aggressive as the Alexandrite, so you should expect more treatments in the long run. As always, we encourage you to be safe in the sun and always use a SPF of 30 or higher.
